Out of 315 patients, 236 people were on trolleys across the country on Thursday the 29th of December.This is according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

On the 28th of December there were a total of 179 people on trolleys in Irish hospitals.

The new figures from the INMO are part of their Trolley Watch and Ward Watch programmes which count the number of additional patients on beds, trolleys or chairs on inpatient wards/unit.

They said that the figures aim to provide a full picture of the problem with hospital overcrowding in Ireland. 

In terms of the breakdown of the figures, South Tipperary General Hospital was found to have had the most people on trolleys with 27. 

The University Hospital Limerick was found to have had the most people in wards with a total of 19 patients. 11 people were also on trolleys in the University Hospital Limerick.

Compared to this time last year there has been an increase of 90 people on trolleys. On December 29th 2015 there were a total of 146 people on trolleys.
