New plans are about to be unveiled to develop Hollywood-style film studios in south Dublin.

The Irish Times reports the founder of Windmill Lane Studios wants to develop a studio on the Irish Glass Bottle site in Ringsend.

The studios would sit alongside the 3,000 new homes already planned for the lot - taking up close to half of the 80-acre site.

U2 frontman Bono has been lobbying the Government to get the green light for the project - the Lobbying Register records that he called the then Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly regarding the proposal.

It notes that, "An informal phone call was made in order to promote the idea of a world class film studio in Dublin" took place.

This project has been in the works for almost half a decade, it is the brainchild of Windmill Lane Studios' James Morris and Alan Maloney, the producer behind the Oscar-nominated film Brooklyn.

The pair said the country "is now a very attractive location to produce television series and movies. Ireland needs the infrastructure to capitalise on the growth of the film and digital industries and the growing international success of Irish film making talent."

The south Dublin site is currently controlled by the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA).

Advocates say 3,000 jobs would be directly created by the studios, with the same number again hired indirectly as an industry spin-off.

A major studio is currently being developed in the old Dell factory on the outskirts of Limerick City.
