The family of the late Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has strongly rejected comments made about him by former ECB Chief Jean Claude Trichet.

Trichet this week denied that he ever phoned Mr Lenihan to order him to 'save your banks at all costs.'

According to the Sunday Independent, the Banking Inquiry will now examine telephone records to determine if the call took place.

The Lenihan family are demanding a right of reply to any evidence which may damage the legacy of the late Finance Minister.

Brian Lenihan died of pancreatic cancer in June of 2011.
