Ireland has "showed the world that a people can be ambitious for equality,” according to Minister for Equality France Fitzgerald.

Ms Fitzgerald this evening signed the commencement order for the Marriage Equality Act, at Dublin Castle, clearing the last legal hurdle before same sex marriage becomes a reality. Tanaiste Joan Burton signed the accompanying legislation under the Civil Registration Act.

From next Monday, November 16, same-sex couples will be able to marry in Ireland.

Chairwoman of Marriage Equality Grainne Healy described the moment of realising same-sex marriage as “incredible.”

“It’s a wonderful, happy, historic day,” she said.

“I think it’s all the more wonderful for all of Ireland because people voted for this on May23rd and I think everybody has a remembrance of that day,” she added.
