The classic 1980s US TV series MacGyver is making a comeback, and not everyone is happy with the changes its creators are planning to make; not only will the show’s star need a set of office stationery and a few pens to engineer a daring escape, the new MacGyver will also need a pair of ovaries.

The US National Academy of Engineering, the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering and the MacGyver Foundation are on the hunt for ideas for the new show, with the only pre-requisite that the lead be a woman who uses science to save the day.
“I literally could not tell you how many times people have come up to me and said, ‘I became an engineer’ or ‘I went into the sciences’ because of MacGyver,” MacGyver-creator Lee Zlotoff said as he launched the competition.
The news comes at a time when just 14 percent of US engineers are women, and the gender-flipping concept follows the same decision for a reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise.
