Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the first fatal road crash of 2015.

A 33-year-old woman was hit by a van in Co Donegal in the early hours of this morning.

The collision happened on Main Street in Ballyshannon at around 1.50am.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van driver, a man in his 50s, was uninjured.

Speaking to OceanFM, Inspector Denis Joyce of Ballyshannon garda station expressed his gratitude to those who came to the assistance of the fatally injured woman:

It marks the first Irish road fatality of 2015.

It comes as the Road Safety Authority has released figures showing deaths on Ireland's roads increased lat year, for the second year running. The number of pedestrians killed rose significantly.
