A candlelight vigil has taken place in Dublin this evening to launch the Save Moore Street campaign.

Sinn Féin wants the Department of Arts and Heritage to put in place measures to preserve Moore Street as a battlefield site, as part of a trade and cultural quarter.

Dublin City Councillors rejected a plan to build a large shopping centre in the area in a recent vote.

It would have seen 14 to 17 Moore Street transfer into council ownership in exchange for 24 and 25 Moore Street.

Chartered Land owns 14 to 17, which has a national monument status, and wanted to exchange it for 24-25 which is owned by the council at the moment.

The buildings of 14 to 17 were the last meeting place and headquarters of the provisional government, which was set up during 1916.

The buildings are widely reported to be the site of the final surrender of the 1916 rebels.

The group met at GPO at 6:30pm this evening and walked around to Moore Street with their candles.
