The High Court has heard that Praveen Halappanavar’s medical negligence case against the HSE over the death of his wife Savita has been settled.

Mr. Justice Kevin Cross also approved a payment of €35,000 to be divided between him, her parents and two brothers.

As expected, the High Court was advised that an out-of-court settlement has been reached between Praveen and the HSE.

The amount wasn’t disclosed but the court was also asked to approve a separate €35,000 payment to be divided between him, Savita’s parents and two older brothers.

Savita Halappanavar died in University Hospital Galway a week after she was admitted and told she was going to have a miscarriage in October 2012.

During her inquest, a consultant denied telling Savita she couldn’t terminate the pregnancy because Ireland was a catholic country and insisted she said it was because she didn’t see a threat to her life.

A HIQA report and a separate HSE review both criticised the handling of her case, but there was never a public admission of liability.

Praveen has since moved to the US and wasn’t in court today.
