An expert on pest control has warned that spiders measuring up to 12cm in length could be making appearances in Irish homes.
Trevor Hayden of Complete Pest Control spoke to the Star about the possibility of spiders "as big as mice" invading households across the country.
However, there's no need to fear for your life, as none of the varieties are capable of harming humans. "While they can bite, they are not dangerous," said Hayden.
A wet spring and warm summer have boosted the numbers of house spiders already, offering the arachnids a feast of insects.
Of all the 420 varieties present in Ireland, only the false widow poses a serious health concern. Though its venom is comparable to a bad bee or wasp sting, it has in some cases lead to serious infections.
