If you’re the hoarding type then it might be time to start rummaging. Those of you lucky enough to have an iPod classic of the right vintage could be in for a €1,000 payout.
Just one month after Apple announced they were no longer producing the 160gb iPod Classic mp3 player, the prices being paid for them on online marketplaces has increased rapidly. On Amazon you can find several 160gb iPod Classic models going for roughly €750 - although there are cheaper options available - while over on eBay they’re pushing €1,000 for a new, 160gb model.
The Guardian reports that since the October discontinuation of the Classic iPod 160gb model more than 3,000 have been sold on eBay.
The surge in price has come about since Apple discontinued the production of the iPod classic, taking it off its website without much fanfare and explaining that they no longer had the ability to source the materials they needed to build the model, and redesigning it wouldn’t have been financially feasible. With 160gb of music still dwarfing the storage capacity of a smartphone, and that retro charm growing fonder in the memory with each passing day, the iPod has become a collector's must have in the last month.
The affection for all things marginally retro is not confined to iPods, and if you can fish out an old mobile phone or two then, depending on the make and model, you could bump up that payday.
The Guardian reports that websites such as vintagemobile.fr are cashing in on a growing love for phones from a time before total technological convergence and growing fears over hacking have led to a surge in people using phones that pre-date the Smartphone era.
While they’re not going to bring in the money of an iPod 160gb, there’s still a payday for the old Snake playing brick in your life. The modest Nokia 3310 will now fetch €34.99, while a Nokia 6300 is available for €129.99. Time to start searching that attic.
