Tánaiste Joan Burton spoke on air on Newstalk during a special broadcast following the attacks in Paris.
Talking to Kieran Cuddihy, she said that she wanted to send her condolences to the people of France and in particular those in Paris, and stated that "I think it is very important in the European Union that we are all democratic countries, and we must address this with resolve and determination, because we can never allow a situation where terrorism can undermine our democracy".
The Tániaste highlighted Ireland's long connection and shared history with France as she expressed her condolences, and underlined the need for Europe to stand together and act with France at this difficult time.
She further stated that the attacks took place in an area of Paris that she is personally familiar with, and that "it's just so sad that not only French people but many, many visitors from other parts of the world" were caught up in the attacks.
Commenting on the status of the Irish citizen who was injured in the attacks, she stated "my understanding is that the person who has been injured is receiving treatment. I think at this stage very few details are available in relation to all of the people who have been injured, but hopefully all of the Irish people are accounted for".
