A new opinion poll indicates that almost two-thirds of Irish people are in favour of holding a referendum on the repeal of the 8th amendment.

The article outlaws abortion, and gives the unborn child equal rights to the mother.

The Millward Brown poll in the Sunday Independent says 63% of people support the right to abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality, while 70 per cent say abortion is acceptable when there is a medical risk to the mother's life other than suicide.

However, less than a third of those surveyed believed abortion should be freely available outside of circumstances like rape, health risk and risk of suicide. 40% oppose abortions in such cases.

Researchers found those opposed to abortion in all circumstances tend to be over 65, live in rural areas, and support Fianna Fáil.

3,769 Irish women were forced to travel broad for abortions in 2014. 

The Pro Life Campaign has hit out against the latest opinion poll.

The organisation says that question should have quoted the amendment in full. Deputy Chairperson of the group Cora Sherlock explains:
