The US says it is "profoundly troubled" over reports that an American teenager was beaten by police. The State Department spokesperson Jen Psaski said:
“We can confirm that Tariq Khdeir, an American citizen, is being held by Israeli authorities in Jerusalem. He was visited by an official from the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem today.
“We are profoundly troubled by reports that he was severely beaten while in police custody and strongly condemn any excessive use of force. We are calling for a speedy, transparent and credible investigation and full accountability for any excessive use of force.”
Meanwhile, An American teenager who was filmed apparently being beaten by Israeli forces - is to be put under house arrest for nine days.
15-year-old Tariq Abu Khdeir, who is from Tampa, Florida and was visiting family in Jerusalem, was severely injured during clashes with police.
Police claim Khdeir was among a group of youths attacking police officers and was one of a group of six detained during the incident.
Israeli police have arrested six suspects over the murder of Palestinian teenager Mohammad Abu Khudair. Tariq Khdeir is the cousin of Mohammed Abu Khudair.
Khudair’s death followed the abduction and murder of three young Israelis, Which the Israeli government have blamed on Hamas, although the Palestinian group deny responsibility. The Palestinian Attorney General has claimed Khudair was burned alive.
