New figures from eBay state that Irish shoppers are spending less on Christmas presents this year.

Its Christmas shopping survey found that the average person will spend €270 on gifts - that's down from €296 last year.

Waterford comes out as the most generous county this year with a whopping average spend of €335 per person - while the people of Monaghan are expected to spend the least at €211 per person.

Overall, Irish people will buy a total average of nine presents for loved ones this year - that's a decrease from the total average of 14 presents last year.

According to the e-commerce site, people in Laois will buy the highest number of presents - while Galwegians will buy the lowest amount of individual presents.

Last week, Retail Ireland indicated that Christmas high-street spending is down. It said that "a post Brexit and Trump erosion in consumer sentiment, a significant increase in online shopping into the UK" has hit the bottom lines of Irish retailers.
