The UK's Brexit secretary, David Davis, has insisted that the UK will enter formal exit talks with the EU next week and that its negotiating team will do so with its "head held high."

His team is "determined to get started," and believes that political volatility following the Conservative Party's failure to secure a majority in last week's British general election will not affect the process.

The Financial Times reports that his team is preparing to make a "very generous" offer regarding the rights of the 3 million non-British EU citizens living in the UK.

Its Westminster sources report that Britain plans to offer to treat non-British EU citizens "as fairly as they have been to this point."

The future rights of UK citizens in the EU and EU citizens in the UK - and provisions for the Irish border after Brexit - are among the issues which the EU wants to resolve before beginning trade talks.
