2013 was the year of the Anglo Tapes, the Seanad Referendum and the new Pope. Social media giant Twitter says these were the top trends in Ireland for this year.

Other events that caught tweeters attention were those such as lapgate and the postal codes.

While Mullingar native Niall Horan's tweet to to celebrate his 20th birthday peaked at 375,000 retweets.

A picture by Zayn Malik of 'One Direction' of bandmate Harry Styles sleeping peaked at 344,000 retweets, and his Tweet thanking their fans for their best wishes when he announced his engagement generated a peak of 336,000 retweets.

Fans also took to Twitter when they heard 'Fast and the Furious' star Paul Walker died in a car crash earlier this month. They shared a message from his official Twitter account, which peaked at 400,000 retweets.

The Twitter bird has become recognisable around the world

But the most popular global message of the year - at 408,000 retweets - came from 'Glee' star Lea Michele, with a message of thanks to fans following the death of her partner Cory Monteith.

Meanwhile Twitter says people are using it to discuss and debate their favourite TV shows. Programmes like Vincent Browne (#vinb), RTÉ Primetime (#rtept), and international reality TV like 'The X-Factor' and 'Big Brother' were all big this year.

"Twitter provided the second screen for TV fans as they tweeted along in real time, sharing the drama with fellow viewers across the country" it says.

Twitter has launched a specific website for this year's biggest tweets.
