Apple has just released its new free-to-download operating system for its desktop and laptop computers, and El Capitan promises a host of newly designed features for those using it, including a new system-wide font, improvements to Spotlight, an update of Notes, and a new ‘Rainbow Wheel of Death’.

Officially known to Apple developers as the ‘spinning wait cursor’, the wheel is seen on computer screens when an application is not responding as it should be. It owes its myriad other names (‘Spinning Beach Ball of Death’, ‘the SPOD’, and ‘Spinning Wheel of Death’) to the Microsoft ‘Blue Screen of Death’, the nickname given by computer users to the blue message alert when the system crases.
The beach-ball design of the wheel has now been updated, with a new matte circle that is more strongly aligned with the design aesthetic of Apple in 2015.
