Social Democrat TD Catherine Murphy says she would be in favour of whitling down the IBRC inquiry to the top six write-offs - as long as it includes all of the transactions that raised concern in the Department of Finance.

An interim report by the IBRC inquiry has found the six largest write offs led to a combined loss for the state of €1 billion.

If all 38 transactions are investigated, it could take several years to complete - but the largest write-offs could be examined in 18 months.

Deputy Murphy - who first raised concerns about transactions between IBRC and Siteserv - says the inquiry has to conclude in a timely fashion.

"Essentially tightening it up and getting to the real core issues would make some sense," Deputy Murphy added.

However she stressed that she would only be in favour of narrowing the focus if the top write-offs include the ones the Department of Finance originally had concerns about.
