Al Gore served as Vice President of the United States from 1993 -2001 under President Bill Clinton. These days he is best known for his work as an environmental activist. He is the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary and is the co-recipient, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for “informing the world of the dangers posed by climate change.”
But did he also invent the Internet? On this day in 1999, then Vice President, Al Gore gave an interview to CCN's Late Edition which explored a large number of topics. During this interview Gore said:
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country’s economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.”
It was quickly clarified that the VP misspoke and was attempting to say that he was responsible, in an economic and legislative sense, for fostering the development the technology that we now know as the Internet.
