European Union member states have agreed new rules to guarantee deposits in European banks.

Ministers have agreed to guarantee all deposits up to €100,000 in all member states including those which do not use the Euro.

The scheme also means customers will have automatic access to their funds and will not have to apply for repayment if their cash becomes unavailable.

The scheme has already been in place in Ireland for several years.
