The European Parliament is working on legislation to introduce caps on the amount that shoppers can be charged for credit and debit card use.
The legislation is aimed at ensuring banks do not charge consumers anything over 0.3% for using their cards.
The new rules would also affect cross-border shopping here, as there are currently different charge levels in place in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
MEP for the Midlands and North West Matt Carthy says the new European legislation would be especially beneficial to people who shop in border areas of the country.
