Facebook has activated their “Safety Check” feature following the suspected terror attacks in Brussels this morning. Users can find out about the service here and click “I’m safe” to reassure friends and family.

The site was criticised for failing to activate the function earlier. Many reported phone line and mobile network difficulties in Brussels in the direct aftermath of the attacks, making it difficult for people to contact their loved ones.

"Safety Check" was enabled in Paris following the terror attacks last November. That was the first time it was used in the aftermath of a non-natural disaster. It was also used following attacks in Nigeria and Turkey.
