Once upon a time, Motorola and Nokia dominated the mobile phone space. Fast forward to 2016 and neither are key players in the game anymore. Motorola has dropped the "rola" bit from their name and are clawing their way in from the bottom up once again. And it's working.

What's important to remember is that not everyone wants a fancy, expensive phone. This is an important fact that makes the Moto devices an attractive prospect. This is the Moto G4 Play.

Out of the box, it looks and feels like a typical Android phone. It reminds me a bit of the iPhone 3G, with its slightly curved back and all black build. It's incredibly light in the hand, which is important to note.

Internally there's a quad-core processor and users have 16GB of built in storage, which can be expanded to 256GB with a microSD card.

The 5-inch screen is not the most stunning we've ever seen, but it ticks the box in terms of a solid offering for messaging, calls and watching a sneaky episode of The Crown on Netflix. The 2800 mAh battery is impressive and the phone held its charge well during the review.

There's an 8MP camera on the back of the device and it can shoot full HD video, which is impressive for a phone in this price range. There's a 5MP camera too, for those all important selfies.

The device is 4G ready and has NFC capability too.

I used this phone and found it to be a reliable device that outperforms many in its price bracket. It struggles slightly when it comes to multi-tasking, but that's a minor issue when the price is considered.

If you're looking for a basic phone, a starter phone for your child or just want something that's robust, this is worth checking out. It's available in store now for €129.99 on prepay.
