It will come as no surprise to most that Ireland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for electricity. Recent Eurostat figures show that after taxes, one unit (or KwH) costs 25.4c.
In comparison, the EU average is 20.8c.
But, as anyone who tries to read their own electricity meter knows, these numbers can be quite hard to wrap your head around.
David Kerr, Managing Director of Bonkers.ie spoke to Newtalk Breakfast this morning, and said that Irish people also use more electricity than most of our neighbours - a symptom of living in "draughty old semi-ds" and a wet climate. We also pay relatively low tax (18%) so most of our bill is going directly to the supplier.
To help visualise the situation, we've come up with a handy infographic to explain how much money a few everyday tasks are costing you, and it compares with a number of other EU countries.
