A Northern Irish bus firm has won a massive contract to supply over 400 double-decker buses to Singapore. Wrightbus will work with Volvo on the three year project which will see 415 buses being supplied.

The contract is worth around €37 million. The parts will be sent abroad in kit form to be assembled by local engineering companies.

This is the fourth consecutive contract to be won from SBS Transit in Singapore for the firm.

Deliveries of the first tranche of 150 vehicles were completed in September 2011, followed by 300 more in January 2013 and a further 565 which will be fully in service by 2015.

Business development director for Wrightbus International, Steve Harper, said "As a long standing supplier, we're delighted to have been awarded this latest contract from SBS Transit to supply a further 415 double deck buses in conjunction with our partner Volvo Bus".

While North Antrim MLA Mervyn Storey has welcomed the announcement, saying "The research and development undertaken by Wrightbus has allowed them to secure orders from across the world, and to meet specialist demands".

"The benefits of orders such as this are not just directly to those employed directly with the company, but right throughout the supply chain with a knock-on benefit across Northern Ireland" he added.
