New details have emerged regarding a number of closure orders issued by Irish health inspectors in 2014. This information was obtained under the Freedom of Information act.

Quinn's Lounge and Bar, Dublin 9

Quinn's in Drumcondra was served with a closure on September 8th when a dead rat was found on the floor of the bar's cellar. Health inspectors also found rat droppings and dry sewage on the cellar floor where foodstuffs including bottled drinks were stored.

The banning order prohibited the sale of these goods as there was a serious risk that they had been contaminated by rats, or raw sewage.

The report comments that: "Dirty toilet paper from overflowed sewage is evident on a manhole cover in the main cellar and at other locations."

This order was issued days after the busy All Ireland hurling final weekend.

Inspectors also noted that they found filthy surfaces in the back bar, and that door seals on bottle fridges were "in an appalling condition" and that many were "covered in extensive mould growth".

These problems were rectified, and the closure order was lifted two days later on September 10th.

Pure Green Juice, Dublin 15

A number of issues were discovered at the health-conscious Dublin juice company's factory in Blanchardstown. These included mouse droppings on the mezzanine level and food splatters on the wall.

The report also says that food handlers were not properly trained in food hygiene, they were observed failing to disinfect, or wash fruit and vegetables and using damaged equipment.

According to the health inspectors: "There is an open gridded staircase over the food wash sink increasing the risk of debris, including faecal matter falling from an individual's shoes onto food in the sink."

A number of plastic storage containers were also damaged, and bottle tops were stored in a crate lined with bin bags and a chipped mug was used to dispense bulk ingredients.

The company have supplied drinks to a number of retailers across Dublin including Spar, Centra, Londis and Supervalue outlets

The closure order was issued on November 8th and lifted on November 10th after these issues were resolved.

Akash Restaurant, Co Dublin

The health inspectors found a cockroach infestation in Akash, an Indian restaurant in Blackrock, Co Dublin.

Dead and live cockroaches were found in the restaurant's bins. A cockroach was also spotted walking across an over-counter refrigeration unit.

Other breaches were also observed - including raw and cooked chickens being stored on the same shelf and frozen chickens being left on a draining board to thaw over night.

The examination also found that the restaurant failed to keep records of use-by dates for certain products.

The closure order was issued on August 7th and lifted on August 22nd.

Kilcoran Lodge Hotel, Co Tipperary

Significant levels of E.coli bacteria was found in mashed potato and cooked vegetables.

Health inspectors also discovered that cooked foods were stored in plastic containers which had held raw chickens.

A closure order was imposed on September 5th but the sale of drinks from the bar was excluded.
