Saorview is Ireland's national digital terrestrial television service. It began operation in October 2010, with the full launch taking place in May 2011. Six years on, those looking to buy a new TV or move away from a TV package still have questions.
We got in touch with Saorview to ask the questions you need to know about the service.
How do I find out if my TV is Saorview ready?
A: We recommend that customers should always check if a TV is Saorview Approved, as this indicates that the TV is designed to receive Saorview correctly. A full listing of Saorview Approved TV sets is found here.
If it is, what do I need to do?
A: To get Saorview, simply connect a suitable aerial to your Saorview Approved TV and tune in - that's it! Talk to your TV retailer or an aerial installer about the best aerial for your location. You'll find a listing of retailers and installers here.
What channels will this give me access to?
A: The TV channels found on Saorview are RTÉ One, RTÉ2, 3, TG4, 3e, Be3, RTÉ jr, RTÉ One+1, RTÉ News now, and Oireachtas TV. Saorview also features 9 Radio stations, RTÉ Radio One, RTÉ Radio One Extra, RTÉ 2FM, RTÉ Lyric FM, RTÉ Raidio na Gaeltachta, RTÉ Gold, RTÉ 2XM, RTÉ Pulse and RTÉ Jr Radio.
If it is not, what do I need to do?
A: If your TV is not Saorview Approved we recommend that you connect a Saorview Approved set-top box to your TV and connect the box to your aerial. The box will allow you to receive Saorview on your TV.
What is the difference between standard Saorview and Combi?
A: A Saorview Combi box or TV allows you to receive free-to-air satellite TV channels in addition to those available with a standard Saorview Approved TV or box.on Saorview. This greatly expands the choice of entertainment available to viewers, and with no monthly bills to pay. There are over 100 channels available to those with a Combi box. These include BBC One, Two, ITV, Channel 4 and more.
How much should one pay for a Combi Box?
A: You should expect to pay somewhere between €90 and €150 for a combi box - ask your local retailer or installer about the options available before you buy.
Do I need to pay someone to install the box?
A: Where a new roof aerial or cabling is needed, we recommend that customers get a professional installer to quote for installation. We are happy to help - if customers need further information they can call us at 1890-222012 and view the help and FAQ section of our website.
