Primary school teachers say they are being subjected to "digital apartheid".

The Government announced a provision of €3m for internet in secondary schools as part of Budget 2015. However, as yet there has been no allocation for primary schools.

The INTO, however, says it is important to develop computer skills at an early age.

Spokesman Peter Mullan says reliable broadband is essential in primary schools:

General secretary of the INTO Sheila Nunan says lack of broadband and modern computers are a major barrier to computer education in primary schools.

“Money must be made available for modern computers and broadband connections and for regular upgrading and maintenance," she said. "Too many of the computers in use in our schools are obsolete.

“Primary schools do not have modern broadband, most have less than domestic connectivity, most schools have clapped-out computers. What computers there are in schools are funded by parents or by private fund raising not by the State,” she added.
