Coffee company Bewley’s says its landmark Grafton Street restaurant is costing it €1 million a year.
Bewley’s has been in a long-running dispute with the building’s owner over the rent on the property.
Its currently costing Bewley’s €1.5m a year in rent. But it says because of the fall in rental price on Grafton Street it should be paying only half that amount.
The Supreme Court earlier this year overturned a High Court ruling that would have allowed the rent to fall to the current market rates.
Bewley’s boss John Cahill told the Irish Times today that the rent is “uneconomic and is draining resources”. The company is keeping reviewing its options about the dispute.
Overall Bewley’s make a profit last year of €2.2m as a sales rose by 6% to €104m. The company makes most of its money from its wholesale coffee business.
