Stoneybatter will air on Newstalk on Friday 27th December from 6pm-7pm.
As part of our Autumn Season of Documentary on Newstalk, producer Brian Gallagher brings us on a journey to one of the most historic districts of Dublin, in Stoneybatter.
From the legend of Robin Hood to the filming of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, from the teeming city cattle market referred to in Ulysses, to the famous School around the Corner (Brunswick Street CBS), the historic Dublin district of Stoneybatter has many stories to tell.
These stories are brought vividly to life in Stoneybatter, a radio documentary featuring the voices of past and present residents of the area, including the “new Irish” who have settled in Stoneybatter. The principal physical features of district – among them Grangegorman Psychiatric Hospital, Arbour Hill Cemetery, Stanhope Street Convent, and Oxmantown Green, are catalysts for human interest stories that provide a fascinating look at how social and working life has evolved in one of Dublin’s oldest and most colourful inner city villages.
Stoneybatter was written and produced by Brian Gallagher, sound engineering and editing by Orla Rogers and Brian Gallagher. The programme was made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound and Vision Fund.
