Chiptune music, virtual reality, cutting edge physics, game jams, coder dojo – when it comes to videogames Ireland has it all. But how can young people get started making games for themselves? How can teenagers turn an avid interest in this exciting new medium, into a career in a booming industry? We set out to answer that question.
Getting into the Game is a one off documentary, funded by the BAI’s Sound and Vision fund. Featuring interviews with world famous Irish game developers like Terry Cavanagh (VVVVVV, Super Hexagon), David O’Reilly (Mountain), and Owen Harris (Deep), we explore what kids should learn to emulate their heroes and become game developers themselves.
Our Getting Covered in Jam segment will introduce the world of competitive videogame creation ‘jams’, through the eyes of Vicky Lee and Andrea Magnorsky, two of the organisers of Global Gamecraft, a live event where anyone can make a game – no matter what their level of experience.
Learning the Art takes us to IT Carlow, where students are learning how to build the next generation of videogames.
In Creating Havok will visit the studios of Dublin videogame middleware developer Havok, whose physics technology is at the heart of thousands of best selling modern games, from the Half Life series to the Assasin’s Creed
In Independent Heroes we meet three leading Irish independent game developers – BAFA award nominated Terry Cavanagh, David O’Reilly a visual artist who explores the line between fine art, film and game development and Owen Harris, a game developer and lecturer at DIT whose upcoming game Deep treats anxiety through virtual reality.
Interviewers Gareth Stack and James Van De Waal, who’ve previously chaired the videogame discussion show ‘Threat Detection’ on Radiomade; bring young listeners on a thrilling journey into game development.

Producer Bio:
Gareth Stack is as an independent radio producer – creating documentaries, drama series and packages. He’s a regular arts correspondent for RTE Lyric FM’s Culture File programme; as well as Communications Officer for the Association of Radio Producers Ireland. He's an active member of The Attic, A4 Sounds collective. His work uses sound in a cinematic textural way, to explore unique perspectives and lived experiences. He is the writer and director of two upcoming dramas for Newstalk, as well as a poetry series for RTE Lyric.
