The latest documentary from the Summer Season of ‘Documentary On Newstalk’
As part of the latest season of Documentary on Newstalk, producer Diane McSweeney travels around Ireland asking one simple question - Do you remember your first time?
‘My First Time’ wonders what people learned about sex in school, and how their expectations differed from their reality. The documentary asks what is so important about the “first time”, why is it such a monumental event for most and if it is so important, why don’t we talk about it more? And even though everybody’s first time is unique, Diane McSweeney finds that common experience at the heart of it all; a shared vulnerability, a longing for trust and if nothing more, a good story to tell. The persons are anonymous, the voices are bare, and the stories, the recollections, the feelings, are honest.
“Sex- it’s just a feeling of complete vulnerability where like, that might be the first person you’re naked in front of.”
“I guess you can prepare for it and picture it, but it’s different when it happens because it’s a physiological response that your body’s never had before.”
“We were actually watching a Tommy Tiernan dvd and I turned around and asked him would have sex with me.. as a favour..”
“I’m still glad he was my first.. Although I can’t remember actually doing it, I remember my feelings for him, and I know the feelings were right.”
“Of course, the next day, being as inexperienced with women as I was, I thought we were boyfriend and girlfriend and remember this awkward distance in the car.”
“Honestly, the strongest feeling was kissing him and thinking, this is what it should be like.”
“I stayed the rest of the night, and the next morning he walked me to the bus stop. And that was my first time…”
