A new Newstalk Documentary investigates suicide within the traveller community.
One in Ten: Suicide in the Traveller Community is a documentary by Producer Sorcha Glackin , supported by the Mary Raftery Journalism Fund, that investigates suicide and mental health within the traveller community.
According to the All Ireland Traveller Health Study 2010, 11% of all deaths within the traveller community are as a result of suicide. This is more than 1 in every ten. Traveller men are 6.6 times more likely than men in the settled community to end their lives by suicide.
In this documentary Minister for State, Kathleen Mahon, refers to the situation as a crisis.
Members of the traveller community speak of their own personal experiences of suicide and explore the mental health challenges that are facing the community. Members of the community identify issues they face on a daily basis, that they believe go affect their mental health. Love/ Hate actor John Connors speaks of how his own father ended his life by suicide and of the mental health issues that he also faced himself.
Here he is on The Pat Kenny Show talking about the documentary:
One in Ten: Suicide in the Traveller Community will be broadcast on Newstalk 106-108fm this Sunday 5th July at 7am and repeated at 7pm on Sunday 5th July 2015.
