This weekend on Newstalk, as part of our spring season of Documentary on Newstalk and with support from the Mary Raftery Journalism Fund we broadcast The Children of Addiction.
In this documentary, we get to hear people tell what life is like if you are the child of parents suffering from extreme addiction.
We hear how it impacts a child when a parent's priority is a substance.
People working in the community supporting these people consider why it is an area that has received little attention in Ireland.
The programme contains the frank and honest accounts of people who have dealt with addiction while caring for their children. It also hears from people who have grown up with severely addicted parents.
Some of the stories included:
- A father who accidentally fed their baby methadone in a bottle.
- A woman who was injected with heroin for the first time by her father.
- A woman who had to bring her children with her in their pyjamas to buy her drugs.
The Children of Addiction will air on Newstalk on 7am on Saturday March 8th and repeated at 11pm on Sunday March 9th.
