For last week's show we went up to Donegal to get a feel for the local business landscape in the north-west - this was part of Enterprising Donegal Business Week, and our own Winning Back the High Street campaign.
While we were there I got a chance to go mussel fishing with Mulroy Bay Mussels. The business is run by the husband and wife pairing of Hugh and Bridget Wilhare - it started as a small operation in the early 80's and it has steadily grown over time.
The bulk of Mulroy Bay's produce is now being exported to France and the Netherlands.
Through the Donegal Enterprise Office the company's mussels have recently had a 12 week trial in seven SuperValu stores as part of Bord Bia's Food Academy Start Programme. It is now hoping to supply more mussels to Irish retailers and restaurants.
We went out on their custom built mussel vessel, its lines can bring in between 12 and 15 tones of mussels - its amazing to see it in action. We caught some footage on our GoPro.
It's not an industry that I knew anything about before, and it was fascinating to chat with Hugh and Bridget - I'll defiantly be keeping an eye out for the company in the future.
