This weekend Newstalk is delighted to broadcast ‘Two Thieves’, a darkly-comic new audio drama written by Hugh Hick and produced by Heather MacLeod.
In an alternate dystopian society, two criminals are up for the public vote on a Government-sponsored radio programme – and only one can be saved. With echoes of Beckett, a biblical story becomes a contemporary exploration of populist rehabilitation and political manipulation, and whether in a world run on the fingertips of snap judgements and mob rule, can anyone really be saved? Bleak and comic in equal measures, Two Thieves holds a lens up to the things we think we know about the people we’ve never met.
The drama features Mary Murray, Matthew Malone, Michael James Ford and Margaret McCauliffe with original music composed by Justin McCann. Two Thieves was written and directed by Hugh Hick, and produced by Heather MacLeod.
The broadcast marks the latest production by the award winning production team of Heather MacLeod and Hugh Hick, whose previous drama ‘Crossing The Red Line’ picked up a Silver award in the ‘Best Digital Drama’ category at the prestigious New York Festivals Radio Awards in 2020 - one of Ireland’s highest placed entries for that year, and is currently one of only two Irish nominees for best radio drama in this year’s Celtic Media Awards. Other recent productions include ‘Hunter’ By Stewart Roche and ‘The Horror Writer’ by Emily Gillmor Murphy. From horror to comedy and everything in between, the team are dedicated to telling new stories that can only be told on radio.
‘Two Thieves’ will broadcast on Sunday September 5th at 8am and will be repeated on Saturday September 11th at 9pm. 'Two Thieves" will then be available to stream on newstalk.com and on all major podcast platforms.
The programme was made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland with the Television License Fee.
