Newstalk's award-winning science show Futureproof will travel this week to French Guiana to witness the launch of the Sentinel 1 rocket as part of the Copernicus mission. The Copernicus Mission is the European Space Agency’s mission to provide real-time high definition data including photography and radar to deal effectively with earthquakes, humanitarian aid and climate change.
As well as seeing the satellite launch the team will helicopter deep into the Amazon Forest and report on everything from conservation to the exotic wildlife. A science observatory station has been built in Nouragues for scientists to witness the relationship of the diverse species that live in the Amazon, from frogs to giant spiders, snakes and monkeys.
The team will record the Leatherback turtles laying their eggs at night on the beaches of Mana. Leatherbacks are the largest turtles on Earth, growing up to seven feet (two meters) long and exceeding 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms). These reptilian relics are the only remaining representatives of a family of turtles that traces its evolutionary roots back more than 100 million years. Once prevalent in every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic, the Leatherback population is rapidly declining in many parts of the world.
As well as reporting on all of this the team will also be making a short documentary detailing their extraordinary journey. Look out for photos and videos on Newstalk.ie powered by Windows on the new surface pro 2 and the Nokia Lumia 1020.
