This Saturday our series of sound stories all about the four elements continues as we look at ‘Water’ and more specifically the water we flush down the lavatory.

We begin our journey in the sewers under Dublin where Jonathan gets a tour of the system that controls what we put down the toilet. In his journey Jonathan sees and smells up close what strange things make their way into our water; you’ll be a bit surprised the things people put down their toilet

But then our journey through our water takes us to meet something much more worrying than anything you can see. Invisible organisms are growing in our water and it’s all to do with our use of antibiotics. We meet Dearbnla Maurice who is an environmental researcher at NUI Galway and she’s looking at what happens to our water when we flush antibiotics down the toilet. The effect that anti-biotics are having on bacteria in our water is a little scary and could have far reaching consequences.

Tune in this Saturday from 10am to hear the full story about the bacteria we’re helping to create.

The four elements is funded by The Environmental Protection Agency’s Research programme, “using knowledge to protect and improve our natural environment and human health”
