The outgoing Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe has been elected after the ninth count in Dublin Central.

The Fine Gael TD joins Sinn Féin leader Mary Lous McDonald who almost doubled the quote by topping the polls in the constituency.

The Green Party's Neasa Hourigan and Gary Gannon of the Social Democrats were also elected with all seats now filled.

Ms Hourigan exceeded the quota of 6,288 with 6,551 votes.

Neither Mr Donohoe nor Mr Gannon reached the quota.

Mr Donohoe has backed Leo Varadkar to lead Fine Gael as it deals with the fall out from the election.

It comes after Senator Paudie Coffey said it was time for the Taoiseach to step aside.

The former TD said that in the wake of Fine Gael's worst-ever election it is time for the party to re-build.

However, Pascal Donohoe disagreed, saying: "I absolutely support Leo Varadkar in his continued leadership of Fine Gael.

"The issues that we have to reflect on as a party, how we respond to the message that the people of Ireland have said to us, that process will be best led if it is led by Leo."
