The Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar has been elected to the 33rd Dáil after the fifth count.
The Taoiseach received 8,763 votes in the four-seat constituency of Dublin West.
He was out-polled by Sinn Féin councillor Paul Donnelly who was elected after the first count with 12,456 votes.
The quota is 8,478 votes.
Mr Varadkar was just the second Fine Gael candidate to be elected after Michael Ring topped the poll in Mayo.
He joins Fianna Fáil's Micheál Martin, Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan in retaining his seat.

Mr Varadkar reiterated that his party will not form a new government with Sinn Féin.
Sinn Féin are leading the way as the new Dáil takes shape, with the majority of elected TDs representing that party.
However, he said “nobody can be forced into some sort of forced marriage or forced coalition".
Táiniste Simon Coveney and Finance Minister Pashal Donohoe also dismissed forming a potential government with Sinn Féin.
