Liam Cahill has been approached regarding the Tipperary hurling manager vacancy.
The position has been left open following Liam Sheedy's decision to retire a week ago.
Sheedy returned to the Premier job in 2018, guiding them to Liam McCarthy success the following year at the expense of Limerick.
Cahill has come to the end of a two-year term in charge of Waterford's hurlers, during which time he led them to the 2020 All Ireland final and a semi-final defeat this year to eventual champions Limerick.
According to the Irish Examiner, Cahill has held talks with the Waterford board about a potential extension.
But the 43-year old could still have his head turned by the big job in his native county.
The Examiner claim Tipp officials have already approached Cahill - and his Waterford assistant Michael Bevans - about a possible switch.
Together they lead Tipperary's minors to All Ireland success in 2016, with an Under-21 All Ireland following in 2018, and an Under-20 All Ireland in 2019.
Speaking to OTB AM last week, two-time All Ireland-winner Paddy Stapleton viewed Cahill as the ideal candidate.
"Tipp probably need somebody to... pursue different avenues with players, and styles of play, over the next 2-3 years," Stapleton said.
He added, "Number 1, he's gone to Waterford straight away and he's got a hop. He's got that bounce off the players.
"He's got real buy-in from the players, the supporters, the county board. That's very, very attractive.
"That is showing on paper, 'I can do it at inter-county level'.
"I suppose, the second little part of that is - a lot of the players... the Jake Morris', the Mark Keoghs, Paddy Cadells, all these young players with Tipp - they've worked under Liam Cahill.
"And if you talk to people that have played under him, you'd say the large majority of them would do absolutely anything for him. They'd go through a brick wall for him.
"That's what I've heard multiple times over the last while. Now, I don't know if the timing is right for all included.
"I've heard a couple of other names - Darragh Egan - I'd know him very well from playing with him all the way at underage and he's a selector at the minute with Tipperary... Very forward-thinking person.
"He is somebody else I think is in the mix at the minute as well."
