If you're on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, chances are you've seen images like this pop up on your feed over the last number of days. 

The app transforms a user's face with artificial intelligence. Changes include adding a 'beautiful smile', appear younger or older, becoming 'more attractive' or even change gender. 

If you haven't tried it yet, you'll find the app free, on both iOS and Android.

Many of those who have tried the app have shared their images on social media, including comedian Jarlath Regan.

The team behind the app have had to apologise, however, after a number of users accused them of creating a 'racist' filter. Users with darker skin tones applied the 'hot' filter within the app to find their faces had been lightened. 

Yaroslav Goncharov, CEO and founder of the company which makes the app, has issued an apology. "We are deeply sorry for this unquestionably serious issue," he said in a statement given to the BBC.

"It is an unfortunate side-effect of the underlying neural network caused by the training set bias, not intended behaviour."
