It’s mother’s day on Sunday and if your mother likes wine we’re tasting a couple of unusual wines today that she should enjoy.

One of the joys of wine if it's a subject you are keen on is discovery. There are an almost infinite number of combinations of country, grape, vintage and producer, so there should always be something new to try. A glance at the average supermarket aisle though would suggest otherwise as most of the wines are made from a handful of famous varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Shiraz or Cabernet.

Marks and Spencer’s winemaking buyers seem to have a keener sense of curiosity than most and stock wines from more unusual places than most and that includes the independents. They’ve made the Eastern Mediterranean, an area of specialisation as they have wines from Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, Lebanon, Turkey and Israel on their shelves and I don't know anyone else who does. The labels may bear names you can't pronounce but I'd urge you to try a few.

Wines Tasted Today on the Show:

‘R’ Rosé Kalecik Karasi & Syrah from Turkey. M & S, €13.99
A wine for mother's day if the reaction of the female staff at M & S is anything to go by when I picked this up. Two of them oohed and aahed and stroked the bottle. It's a clear cylinder shape with flat shoulder. like a giant perfume bottle. It's also screen printed rather than labelled with floral motifs and it's all very pink. Oh and the wine's not bad either, dry and strawberry scented.

Red on Black Nemea M & S €13.99
Made from the Agiorgitiko variety fortunately also known as St George. The name sounds like a fashion label so maybe it would be a suitable wine for mum on mother's day and she should enjoy the juicy dark cherry like fruit.
