Somebody to Love: Sexuality and Disability in Ireland will be taking part in Trinity College, Dublin on 25th April will explore issues of sexuality, decision making capacity, and current legislation in the context of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Speaking in advance of the seminar, Dr Edurne García Iriarte, Assistant Professor in Intellectual Disability, commented:
“People with disability in Ireland experience numerous barriers to live their sexual lives as other non-disabled members of society. Attitudinal barriers of the general population, lack of legislative support for people with intellectual disabilities, restrictive policies in services, lack of sex education, and inadequate personal services all contribute to the violation of their right to marriage, family, parenthood and relationships as provided in article 23 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”
Dr Edurne García Iriarte joined Sean Moncrieff today to talk about this issue.
