Michel Pierre, 58, was severely injured when his toilet exploded on him in his Brooklyn apartment. Pierre was sent to the hospital and requires plastic surgery on his face.
Pierre was testing the water pressure in his apartment but the flushing triggered the toilet to explode sending flying shards of porcelain that pierced his face, arms and legs. According to his lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, Pierre required a total of 30 stitches.
The incident not only physically scarred Pierre, but it scarred him mentally as well. He is now so fearful of flushing his own toilet that he needs to use a rope and hides behind the bathroom door before flushing. Pierre says, "It sounds silly but I'm scared."
"Those fears are part of his damages," said his lawyer. "Clearly toilets are supposed to flush, not explode."
Pierre was temporarily knocked unconscious and covered in blood from the explosion. Rubenstein said a lawsuit would be filed against the management company of the building so that a jury could decide how much compensation Pierre should be paid.
