A married man living in Shanghai who had an affair has been ordered to pay 30,000 yuan (€4000) to his mistress. The woman, surnamed Chen, went to court claiming he had misrepresented himself intentionally and hid that he was married.
In the first case of its kind, Pudong New Area People's court in China announced the compensation was for 'violating her virginity by deception'.
The two met online in 2009 but only began dating in 2013, later travelling to Singapore, where they consummated the relationship, according the Shanghai media.
Three months later, he broke up with Chen unexpectedly and ended all contact with her. In February, she broke into he ex boyfriend’s apartment where she found him with his wife, to whom he'd been married since January 2013.
Chen sued, accusing him of violating her rights to virginity and health and demanding more than $81,000 in psychological damages, plus medical costs of $250.
The courts agreed with her but decreased her financial demand.
"Violating the right to virginity might lead to harm to a person's body, health, freedom and reputation … it ought to be compensated," the court said.
