1 in 4 Americans does not know the Earth revolves around the Sun.
The findings are the result of a survey, carried out by the National Science Foundation, which polled 2,200 Americans. The quiz covered general science questions and found that just 74% of respondents were aware that Earth orbits the Sun. Things didn’t get much better after that, and the overall average score on the 9 question quiz was barely enough to scrape a passing grade.
When it came to evolution things got bleaker still, with 52% of respondents not knowing humans had evolved from animals.
Only 39% answered correctly that “The universe began with a huge explosion.”
We’re not without our own sins on this side of the Atlantic however, as the most recent test of this type in the EU showed just 70% were aware that humans had evolved from other species of animal.
