A 10 year old boy with cerebral palsy from birth is to be paid over €1.5m under a High Court settlement with the Coombe Hospital in Dublin.
Jamie Patterson sued the hospital through his mother, Teresa Patterson, from Galtymore Park in Drimnagh, Dublin.
The court heard that Teresa Patterson went into labour with her son Jamie on the morning of November 3rd 2003 and was admitted to the Coombe Hospital.
After several hours of contractions, Syntocinon was administered to the then 19 year old, to help induce labour.
It was claimed that the dosage was increased that evening, causing over stimulation of the womb and allegedly depriving the unborn baby of oxygen.
10 year old Jamie has cerebral palsy and cannot speak or sign. Teresa Patterson has now trained as a carer to look after her son and reached the settlement with the hospital to provide for his care. It will be reviewed again in two years and liability was not admitted.
