At least two people have been killed and up to 70 injured after a car drove into crowds at a Christmas market in Germany.

The tragedy took place in the city of Magdeburg, in the east of the country. 

Early signs indicate it was a deliberate attack and there are reports a suspect has been arrested.

Hospitals are preparing for a mass casualty event.
