Twerking became an international phenomenon last year after superstars such as Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj began to perform it in both music videos and live on stage.

This week, 13 dancers took part in the UK National Twerking Championship where the winner would get to perform on stage with rapper Nicki Minaj.

The women danced, bounced and shook their way through five rounds before the winner, Jemini, was announced.

The five rounds included freestyle performances, 'jiggle and pop' and even an upside down round where performers had to twerk while standing on their hands.

Jemini, a 21-year-old dance hall performer, was crowned the winner and took home £1,000 (€1,300) in cash and will get to dance on stage with Nicki Minaj on her next tour in the UK.

"People don't do it anymore because it was an internet fad and people thought twerking was going to be that too because of Miley Cyrus. But because it is actually a dance and requires skill people have embraced it," said Harry Anthony, the event organiser and presenter from Jump Off TV.

"I don't think it'll ever go away. It's acceptable in mainstream culture now."
